US VERSUS THEM – OIL & WATER | November 12th, 2011

November 05 2011 . 05:17pm

in conjunction with
Known Gallery, City Fog Surf, Biltwell, Chop Cult, Lowbrow Customs and Dice Magazine

A group show of new works and art.

441 North Fairfax Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Public opening:
November 12th, 2011 | 8-11pm

Traditionally oil and water do not mix. The surf, hot rod and motorcycle cultures that grew out of Southern California from the 50’s -70’s however, were all connected by the idea of personal freedom and expression- not conforming to the standards of the societies they existed in.  For this show we are bringing together dozens of artists and craftsmen from these respective backgrounds and beyond- from legends to rookies.  Each artist will be provided with a particular canvas: a blank board from City Fog Surfboards, helmets from Biltwell, gas tanks from Lowbrow Customs among other items.

To kick off the event a run is being organized for that day that will end at the gallery on Fairfax.  On hand there will be a live performance by ex-TSOL singer Joe Woods, as well as live installations and pinstriping.

To coincide with the show, Us Versus Them will be creating a pop up shop that will occupy the back room at Known Gallery. In addition to UVT Fall product and accessories, exclusive artist prints and tees based around some of the pieces included in the show will be for sale. PBR is providing beverages, and UVT will also be creating a custom ale brewed specifically for the event.

Us Versus Them x Coachella tee

April 08 2011 . 09:28pm

For the most part, the projects Us Versus Them gets involved in or sets up are sprung from their everyday lives or the friends around them.  It’s all borne out of the anti-cynical idea of incorporating into the brand the fun you have with what you do in your everyday life.  They set up art projects with friends because they inspire them.  They made our bike frame because it was what we want to ride.  So when UVT’s Mike Glory presented the team with the opportunity to design a collaborative shirt for Coachella this year it required little thought on their end.  Having been in attendance nearly every single year since it’s inception, They have been witness to the growth and changes, not only that the actual event has gone through, but it’s place in the cultural landscape.  Harking back to music festivals of decades past, it ushered in and made viable the idea of mixing modern independent rising music acts with established headliners and reuniting cult acts from the past.

When it came down to coming up with a concept, UVT’s Graham Nystrom took a cue from the past and do a classic rock poster style design, but with a decidedly modern twist.  Using their crosscut logo as the starting point, the standard palm tree was replaced by a date palm, which is a main crop in the Coachella Valley. Their machete was replaced by drumsticks. The acid trip lettering was replaced by a stylized pixaçao rendition of Coachella.  All hand drawn, take a look.

UVT x SE RACING Fixed freestyle frameset available now!

January 21 2011 . 10:46pm

Today marks a milestone for the brand. For the past couple years we have been building our fixed gear team and now through countless hours working out the details, we are proud to present our first collaborative project with SE Bikes. Spearheaded by our own James Banuelos, the UVT frame was designed from the ground up to withstand the harshest abuse that riders are putting their bikes through. Tested by Gus Molina, Josh Boothby, and DJ Mull, the frame has been put through months of abuse to make sure that theframe is bombproof. The Cr-Mo frame has been fully heat treated with the top and down tubes being double butted. The seat tube has been cut-out to allow clearance for larger (50c) tire sizes along with ovalized & tapered seat and chain stays for extra tire and foot clearances. The 73mm mid bottom bracket and Campy compatible integrated headset are both externally machined and a sealed Tange headset comes installed as well as a trick integrated seat clamp. Finally, the Landing Gear forks are heat treated & butted for even more strength.

To match the aggressive nature of the technical specs, we gave the bike our signature treatment, choosing a metallic grey paint for the base color of the frame, and wrapping our tonal hand drawn snake scale print around the front, and our brand motto “Never Stop” is printed on the brake bridge along with UVT/SE branding on the seat tube.

These are now available in extremely limited quantity at our online store.
