Last night was the beginning of a new relationship. One of the world’s oldest and most decorated camera brands Leica held its first showing with famed N.Y.C. graffiti artist Mr. Stash. Held at their Los Angeles store, they were showcasing Stash’s first ever photo works, which were featured in black and white. His images were shot in various locations ranging from N.Y. to Tokyo. Showcasing his versatility with a camera and the ability to capture various types of subjects was awesome to view through his lens. It was pretty cool to see someone known widely in one arena for his talent shift it to another medium. Free Range was cooking up some good as well as some beverages provided by Sean B. Good tunes and smiles filled the rooms along with people sharing a interest in photography as well as Leica itself. I have been to my share of photo shows usually held at galleries or store fronts and I must say adding the element of a store such as Leica for people to look all different types of camera bodies and lenses during a show makes it that much more enjoyable. Not only can people nerd out over the art itself via Stash’s work but then you can walk a few feet over and take a look at amazing tools. With David Gensler heading this new movement with Leica, it will be exciting to see what is to come over the next year for the 100 year old brand.

Rolling Stone magazine features Dennis Morris | Bob Marley: The Stories Behind 17 Rare and Unseen Images

British photographer Dennis Morris was a high school student in London when he first met Bob Marley. “I was into Jamaican music, and I read that he was coming over to tour England,” Morris recalls. “So I bunked off school, went to the Speak Easy Club, where he was playing that day, and waited and waited. Eventually he arrived, and I said, ‘Can I take your picture?’ He said, ‘Yeah, man, come in.'”

Morris ended up joining Marley and the Wailers on their 1974 tour of northern England, kicking off a close professional relationship that lasted to the end of the reggae superstar’s life seven years later. “I call this one ‘Burnin”,” Morris says of the trio of images at left. “That was from that early tour – we were sitting together, and he said, ‘Let me show you how to smoke a spliff, Dennis.” He laughs. “That was my initiation.”

On March 29th, a new exhibit called “Bob Marley: GIANT” will open at Los Angeles’ Known Gallery, showcasing some of Morris’ greatest photos of Marley. BOB MARLEY: GIANT by DENNIS MORRIS
It was while skipping school to wait for Bob Marley to arrive for his sound check at the Speak Easy Club on London’s Margaret Street that Dennis’s music photography career really began. Bob Marley was so taken with the young teenager who was waiting for him that he invited Dennis to come along and take pictures on their upcoming tour. Dennis packed his bag and jumped on the bus.
Morris and Marley felt an immediate connection, as Morris stresses, this was a man who “knew he was on a mission”. He was out to break down barriers and confront intolerance through his actions and through his rebel music. Morris’ first photographs of Bob taken at the Speakeasy in 1973 are grainy and dimly lit – just one spot of light catches the instantly recognizable features. The expression on Marley’s face is intense, such was his total immersion when on stage. “He could have been praying, he could have just got hit by a bullet, he could even been laughing,” says Morris, describing his favorite image of this time. “Seeing him live, he expressed himself in all those ways: in his face, his movements, his eyes, everything.” Other photographs in Morris’s reportage-style collection capture Marley backstage, on the tour bus and at home in Hope Road, Kingston, Jamaica. They are all intimate images but they focus on the public Bob Marley.

“He wasn’t a very tall man, but he was a giant of a man. He had immense presence, and the beauty was that it spread on to you. You had to really get your act together.”

“I think when he died, half of Jamaica suffered,” says Morris. “He fed a lot of people, he supported a lot of people emotionally, financially. He put Jamaica on the map.” Marley was like a priest, recalls Morris. People would go to him with their problems and he would give them an answer, and before he went on stage he was “almost like a shaman, drawing inspiration before they walk out to face the masses and give the message. Then he’d walk on stage and the place would light up.”

The exhibition consists of 28 intimate portraits and live shots of Bob Marley in black and white and color taken by Dennis Morris.

About Dennis Morris:
Dennis Morris is a British-based artist who has used the camera to produce an in-depth body of work on extraordinary individuals.
His work is closely associated with music, having created some of the most iconic and memorable images of Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols as well as the Marianne Faithull Broken English album cover, but he has also captured the essence of the Sikh community of Southall (UK), the collection was subsequently bought by English Heritage. He is also created the iconic Public Image Ltd logo and their first two album sleeves, including the Metal Box. Several books of his work have been published, including Bob Marley: A Rebel Life, Destroy on the Sex Pistols and Growing Up Black, a chronicle of Black Britain in the 60s and 70s. His work is well recognized and has been exhibited internationally (Today Art Museum, Beijing; Laforet Museum, Tokyo; Arles Photography Festival, France; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland…).
His photographs are included in prestigious public and private collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and have appeared in numerous publications, including Rolling Stone, Time, GQ, Vogue, W, Frieze; Lipstick Traces: a Secret History of the Twentieth Century by Greil Marcus, Century by Bruce Bernard, and 100 Days of Active Resistance by Vivienne Westwood.

Iconic photographer/director Estevan Oriol releases a follow-up to his cornerstone LA Woman book: Portraiture of Los Angeles Volume 1. The release of Oriol’s first published book, LA Woman (2009), caught fans and followers by surprise. Capturing the women of Los Angeles in their most confronting, gritty environments it was not the subject matter he was most well-known for. It established Estevan Oriol as the king of female street photography, cementing his reputation as Los Angeles’ most respected street photographer. LA Woman was a smash hit, selling out globally in a very short time. Portraiture of Los Angeles Volume 1 is the next compelling installment of Oriol’s work to date. This series will comprise hundreds of photos documenting the most amazing, real L.A street life the public has ever witnessed, from the lens of its originator Estevan Oriol. Dealing with sensitive environments and highly guarded subjects, Oriol has earned the trust and respect of the streets at all levels – from taking images on set of Hollwood’s A list, to the most reclusive hoods in Los Angeles and all over the world. In commemoration of the release, the following activities will take place: a series of viral videos will be launched bringing you up close with the subject matter; Gallery shows and events will take place strategically around the world. Apart from pioneering genres of street photography, Estevan Oriol is also creating a new road map of how the normal systems of publishing have been working, inviting his fans to be a part of the process and to easily access content. Drago and SA Studios Global (SASG) – Oriol’s creative conglomerate – have entered into a partnership with the intention of revisiting the current publishing model. Recognizing the importance of digital in this new frontier, the physical is just as important.
