Modernica Chair Group Show at Soze Gallery

October 30 2014 . 12:47am

This Saturday, the 1st of November, LA’s Soze Gallery will be opening a group exhibition in collaboration with the Modernica furniture company. The company that keeps the spirit of Modernism movement alive with their products, teamed up with the West Hollywood showspace for an unique charity event.

For this show, artists will create custom painted fiberglass shell chairs, made on the original Herman Miller equipment. Differentiating in styles and techniques, participants will present their version of this legendary chair. This unique show will include gallery friends and artists including RETNA, Erin Riley, Aaron De La Cruz, Ben Frost, Augustine Kofie, Neckface, Mel Kadel and many others. Part of the proceeds from this show will be donated to benefit The Art Of Elysium, a non-profit organization that brings empowering artistic programs to children in the local hospitals in the area.

The show will be on view until November 15th so make sure you check out this original event if you’re in the area.

NECKFACE | DRINKING ON THE JOB at NEW IMAGE ART, LA

August 28 2014 . 10:00am

This past weekend in LA at New Image Art, Neckface opened a brand new show entitled “Drinking on the Job.” That said, the show had a few references to drinking, and the process of making the show came down to this: “Each piece is imagined and drafted in an impaired state, in the field, sometimes with little to no recollection of his sullied genius until the scrawled upon napkin is found the morning after.” And here are the results…

Neckface x New Image Art – “Keg Carver” from New Image Art on Vimeo.

If you haven’t seen or heard anything from Neckface in the last year or so it’s because he’s been busy. Buried in the trenches and immersed in the field, the artist has been working devilishly hard on his upcoming solo show, Drinking On The Job, opening Friday August 22rd at New Image Gallery in Los Angeles. Featuring work that is born out of darkness tender only to barflies, the project is inspired by and fully consumed with the world of alcoholic hedonism through the eyes and mouth of Neckface himself.

Part artistic practice and part anthropological query, you could say that Neckface ‘went native’ in order to create this series. Working days and nights, the artist adhered to a strict creative process shrouded in the lighthearted but gloomy atmosphere akin to bars and pubs. Each piece is imagined and drafted in an impaired state, in the field, sometimes with little to no recollection of his sullied genius until the scrawled upon napkin is found the morning after. From there, the piece is refined into an exquisite form that falls somewhere between the work of Robert Crumb and a PlayBoy cartoon with the sensibility of an adult (alcoholic) version of Bart Simpson.

Vulgar in both theme and tone, this work does in fact ask ontological questions regarding bar culture. The premise of such an inquisition may seem mundane at first glance, but the comically grim one-liners of each drawing are entirely at home in the presentation. What is of paramount importance here, is that we remind ourselves how a debase arena of public life has produced a wealth of material for Neckface to draw upon; he is like a beacon in the crude barroom world. With little regard for ideals rooted in anything remotely P.C. this work asks you to suspend any serious sentiments and see the artistic validity and humor that lies somewhere near the bottom of a bottle.

About RISE
Los Angeles is blessed with an abundance of great artists, fine galleries and world class museums. However, it is not as rich as many U.S. cities in terms of public art in open spaces. We are constantly bombarded with signage and commercial advertising in our streets, but where is the public art there? Enter the graffiti artist. We’re talking not about taggers, who commit vandalism simply to assert their identity or territory, but about artists who take their creative efforts seriously. Those who talent and work have been recognized by the established art community. All of the artists represented in our exhibit have done graffiti at some point in their careers. Most if not all of them have done pieces on the streets that were commissioned or otherwise authorized by the real property owners, thereby avoiding the element of vandalism, and all of them have made their way into reputable galleries if not museums. The heart and soul of graffiti art is to be visible from the streets and to be part of the urban landscape, so the challenge for these artists is how to maintain this heart and soul while displaying their work in galleries or museums.

We hope you enjoy our exhibit and that it sparks a greater appreciation of the graffiti art that pervades our city. We must also express our heartfelt gratitude to Inner-City Arts for allowing us to be part of their 2013 Summer on 7th!
