MIke Shinoda has a piece for sale for a good cause

December 02 2010 . 11:52am

Title: Follow The Leader
Size: 24"x24"
Medium: Mixed Media on wood panel

Available HERE

About the piece: Follow the Leader is an original work by Mike Shinoda for the "Family Tradition" art show, a select group show inspired by the classic film ‘The Godfather,’ curated by Ron English.

Michael Kenji Shinoda is a Japanese American songwriter, performer, record producer and visual artist from Agoura Hills, California. He is best known for his vocal and musical endeavors with two-time Grammy winning, multi-platinum rock band Linkin Park. The band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide to date. Their debut, "Hybrid Theory" is certified diamond (10 million sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America. The group has just announced North American tour dates supporting "A Thousand Suns," which debuted at #1 in the US and 14 other countries this year, and has already sold over 1.5 million units worldwide.

Mike was the youngest of his graduating class from Art Center College of Design in 1998, with a B.F.A. in Illustration. He has a hand in most artistic facets of Linkin Park’s imagery, including album artwork, band merchandise, web design and on-stage production art.

Outside of music, Mike’s art has been a constant focus. In 2004, Shinoda broke through with his first show, at Gallery1988 in Los Angeles. The show, entitled Diamonds, Spades, Hearts, and Clubs, featured collaborative artwork with Gary Baseman, graffiti legend SEEN, James "Dalek" Marshall, Greg "Craola" Simkins, and Linkin Park’s Joe Hahn. In subsequent years, Mike went on to create custom products for charity with partners like Music For Relief, Honda, DC Shoes, and Kid Robot. In 2008-2009, Shinoda created a two-part show, Glorious Excess (Born) and Glorious Excess (Dies), at the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles. The show was one of the most successful in the museum’s history.

In 2005, Shinoda and his bandmates started Music For Relief, a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of musicians, music industry professionals, and fans, to support disaster relief and combat climate change.

Proceeds from Mike’s personal art projects, gallery shows, and merchandise benefit the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at the Art Center College of Design, a fund created to benefit promising illustration and graphic design students with financial need. In 2009, Shinoda was honored by Art Center with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his artistic and philanthropic endeavors.

Hey Casey…Thanks for reaching out. The pre-order went up today–we’re really excited. It’s the first time we’ve been able to sell direct-to-fan from our website, so we wanted to go big: if you buy anything (even the skate deck or the t-shirt), you get the digital version of the album for free. Everyone who buys anything gets that, plus access to presale concert tickets, so you get better seats (But you don’t need to worry about the seats thing–you know we’ll always have room for you and the crew at the show). And the digital versions of everything as early as humanly possible.

The skate deck is a real winner. Pro-level, skate-able quality, sick art. Hand signed by all the guys in the band, and limited to 1000 copies in the world. $99.99

As for A THOUSAND SUNS…The album is our most adventurous yet. We took a lot of risks on this one: some of the craziest sounds and a couple of the longest songs in our career. As a general idea, it’s kinda a response to what’s going on in popular music: too many people are focused on "singles" and putting things together in poppy, bite sized pieces…so we decided to do the opposite. We’re making a case for "the album." If someone wants to listen to it in pieces, it works that way…but they’ll be missing out on the experience you get on if you hear it as a whole. We really put our hearts into this one; I think it’s pretty special. It comes out on September 14th.
