Artist duo DABSMYLA presents Before and Further, a 4,000 square foot installation takeover of a stand-alone 1930 built Spanish Revival workplace building, located on the Modernica factory property. DABSMYLA have fully transformed its interior and exterior with their newest paintings, sculptures, installations and exclusive furnishings from limited-edition fiberglass shell chairs and hand painted ceramics to custom-built lighting installations, all designed and created exclusively for their collaboration with Modernica utilizing the factory’s extensive technical capabilities.

The already rich history of this building and Modernica create a fitting compliment for DABSMYLA’s spectacular experience. This long awaited solo show will be the follow up to their tremendous work in designing the logo and set of the 2015 MTV Movie Awards. This exhibition closes their already very busy year, which includes an enormous private showcase in New York City and having painted numerous murals worldwide.
Before and Further is inspired by the individual life experiences of DABSMYLA – experiences that ultimately resulted in bringing the two artists together and explores their mystical union and shared balance of love, creativity, friendship and sexuality. The significance of two becoming one is most essential to DABSMYLA, in their work and more importantly in their role as husband and wife. Their artistic singularity is evident though the distinguished back-and- forth process of painting they equally share. Before and Further recalls their unseenjourney of experience, the shared creative energy they’ve embraced and their cosmic consciousness of togetherness. This installation exemplifies DABSMYLA’s adventures in modern living and artistic partnershipwith a bit of psychedelic experimentation.

HYPEBEAST features a photo recap of art exhibit BEAST ASTRAY at Known Gallery

October 02 2014 . 07:47pm

Last week, we foreshadowed Joe Hahn’s latest creative endeavor, the full-length feature film MALL and its subsequent activations surrounding the movie’s debut. Amongst the most important complementary pieces to the movie starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Cameron Monaghan and Gina Gershon was the conceptualization of “BEAST ASTRAY,” a multi-artist show featuring several of Hahn’s closest friends and associates. Each artist was given the task of creating their own respective takes on the movie’s theme and storyline of five suburbanites linked together amidst a seemingly random mall shooting. Among the artists involved included Aaron De La Cruz, Dabs Myla, Edwin Ushiro, Estevan Oriol, Jasper Wong, James Jean, Mark Dean Veca, Mike Shinoda, REVOK, Ron English, Rostarr, Saber, Slick, STASH and more who filled the stark white walls of KNOWN GALLERY with the movie’s RX-7 taking center stage in the gallery. The show is open now until October 5.

Recap Photos of Cruel Summer at Jonathan Levine Gallery curated by Roger Gastman

August 22 2014 . 08:48pm

Summer is the season where new art gets discovered as many group shows pop up when most of the art industry goes on vacation before things pick up again in September. Jonathan LeVine Gallery worked with renowned curator Roger Gastman to bring together a bold grouping of graffiti & urban artists both old and new. Entitled Cruel Summer, this great exhibition showcased a new level of work from each artist. There was some familiar imagery, but the work comes off fresh to attendees who were clamoring for something new for their senses. Gastman has been working in the scene for decades and it showed as it seemed like every writer & artist in town was in attendance.

The large scale show was held at both gallery locations, which were needed for the battalion of fine artists involved including Ben Venom, Blade, Caleb Neelon, Cleon Peterson, Cope2, Dabs Myla, Eric Haze, Finok, Freedom, Horfe, HuskMitNavn, Mark Bode, Maya Hayuk, Mike Ballard (Cept), Mike Giant, Niagara, Pose, Revok, Rime, Risk, Sam Friedman, Shepard Fairey, Tim Conlon and Victor Reyes.
