About Diaspora:

In Askew’s first Los Angeles solo exhibition, he continues to explore themes from last years Sydney show, ‘The Evolving Face’ – specifically the dynamics of cultural, ancestral and social identity in the greater Pacific region. This concept redefines itself as these communities disperse in places like the West Coast of the US, Australia and New Zealand. There is an omnipresent duality existing within Pacific communities – concepts of transience and migration but with strong specific cultural identities that flourish and maintain strength, often impacting and evolving wherever they gain a foothold. For this show ‘Stelly’ who is based in Sydney, Australia and is of Fijian descent is the face of this concept.

In the artists home base of Auckland, New Zealand, the city’s identity has been dramatically altered by Pacific migration over the past 3 decades. Auckland is arguably the current epicentre of the modern Pacific, this forces it’s people to reevaluate the way they identify themselves – even those of European or Asian descent. Feeling a disconnect from his various European ancestries, Askew One has mostly embraced this new sense of identity, yet still walks a fine line between immersion and the analytical view point of an outsider.

With over 20 years of experience and the need to reach out to the world from his home in remote New Zealand, Askew is self-taught in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, directing and editing music videos and moving images.

Elliot Francis Stewart
Born in 1982, Elliot Francis Stewart is the third youngest of nine children and grew up in the Eastern Auckland suburb of Pakuranga. He spent his childhood engrossed in comic books and creating elaborately rendered drawings of galleons and scenes of war.

In 1996 his family relocated to the inner city neighborhood of Grey Lynn and he attended the now defunct Auckland Metropolitan College, an alternative school where he met his tight-knit crew of friends who became known as the RFC (Rat Fink Club) crew.

Initially garnering a reputation for his often-offbeat cartoon-based graffiti, Elliot aka Deus became part of TMD (The Most Dedicated) in 2001 and quickly established himself as the foremost talent in character based work in aerosol. Furthermore his early Auckland shows at The Gully Lounge in St Kevin’s Arcade and Disrupt Gallery, allowed him to showcase elaborate and influential illustrative works often created on found objects in common house paint and ballpoint pen.

Elliot currently lives in Auckland and works as an artist and freelance illustrator.

Rolling Stone magazine features Dennis Morris | Bob Marley: The Stories Behind 17 Rare and Unseen Images

British photographer Dennis Morris was a high school student in London when he first met Bob Marley. “I was into Jamaican music, and I read that he was coming over to tour England,” Morris recalls. “So I bunked off school, went to the Speak Easy Club, where he was playing that day, and waited and waited. Eventually he arrived, and I said, ‘Can I take your picture?’ He said, ‘Yeah, man, come in.’”

Morris ended up joining Marley and the Wailers on their 1974 tour of northern England, kicking off a close professional relationship that lasted to the end of the reggae superstar’s life seven years later. “I call this one ‘Burnin”,” Morris says of the trio of images at left. “That was from that early tour – we were sitting together, and he said, ‘Let me show you how to smoke a spliff, Dennis.” He laughs. “That was my initiation.”

On March 29th, a new exhibit called “Bob Marley: GIANT” will open at Los Angeles’ Known Gallery, showcasing some of Morris’ greatest photos of Marley.
