California-based artist George Thompson’s new series of paintings debuts at Known Gallery on Saturday, October 20, 2012. “Pageantry” is part of Thompson’s ongoing social commentary on what he finds both disgusting and fascinating about current ideas and phenomena held dear by the mainstream. This installment features depictions of “tiny princesses” that are paraded with pomp and ceremony by parents like pets, to be judged by other adults—exemplifying the shallow sense of values that run rampant today in “culture.” Thompson imparts further discussion on the subject matter by employing classic oils on canvas, to depict the darlings of high-tech media.

Like other series of paintings he has executed, he says he “falls short in presenting the exacting likenesses in these works,” thus leaving some of the interpreting up to the viewer to celebrate the train-wreck of images.
